BAMBOUNOU X BRUCE – FINAL CONFERENCE

Posted on 2021-07-26

Bambounou follows up the first edition of his new label Bambe, this time inviting the ever-impressive Bristolian artist Bruce to the table. The product of their first collaborative attempts, Final Conference is three tracks of neat and creative club music reinterpretations. ‘Crash’ opens with a mechanistic rhythmic push and pull, with unpredictable clap patterns and deceptively deadly sub movements. ‘Rai’ (an ode to the 90’s PSG midfield maverick?) is a jaunty melodic techno number which wouldn’t sound out of place in a Call Super set. The title track closer is a sparser, more broken but impactful take on bleepy techno.

ALVARO BARRINGTON – WAVE YOUR FLAGS II

Posted on 2021-07-26

This new group of paintings features large and medium-scale hibiscus flowers painted in the flag colours of the Caribbean nations presented in sculptural frames that speak to the ubiquitous materials used for housing structures in the region. As the national flower of Jamaica, Barrington has often abstracted the hibiscus motif through gestural painting as a symbol for community, celebration, sexuality and nostalgia, and here repeats the image across the exhibition in a nod to Andy Warhol’s Flowers series (1964) and ideas around tradition and mechanical reproduction in the context of cross-cultural exchange.

NEW BALANCE 577 DESATURATED PACK

Posted on 2021-07-26

Next up for the Boston-headquartered sneaker company is a fresh iteration of the Made-in-England New Balance 577 which has just dropped in a new “Desaturated Pack” colorway.

The color story for these lifestyle kicks is rife with earthy tones and vivid complements. Mesh underlays are smothered with a light beige hue and come packaged with a dark brown suede quarter panel and bold yellow “N” logos. More suede accompaniments are present along the forefoot and the heels, the former being drenched with a slightly more saturated beige while the latter is dyed in a purple tone. Bursts of orange also get a seat at the table here along the collars and branding on the tongues. Capping off the base layer’s design are white interior lining and lower heel counters. Midsoles split between silver and angelic color-blocking while the waffle soles are dialed to a solid black.

REVELATIONS II

Posted on 2021-07-26

Revelations II: Recent Photography Acquisitions presents a sweeping survey of documentary and fine-art photographic traditions practiced in the American South from the early 20th century to the present. Acquired by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art over the past decade, these photographs represent diverse perspectives and experiments within the medium, and reflect the depth and complexity of the region.

Revelations II highlights an array of photographic processes and techniques made by twenty-five photographers working within the traditional art genres of landscape, portraiture and still-life. In recent years, emerging and underrepresented photographers have been a focus of the Museum’s photography exhibitions, programming and acquisitions. These emerging voices join established masters within the Ogden’s collection to illustrate the rich tradition of photography in the South.

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT X DC SHOES

Posted on 2021-07-26

As a brand rooted in skateboarding and streetwear, DC’s collision of 90’s East Coast style and West Coast creativity aligns naturally with Jean-Michel Basquiat’s voice and vision. The collaboration is a fitting tribute to Basquiat’s journey from street artist to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

The collection includes a broad array of staple DC footwear and apparel, from the popular new Manual to the classic Lynx Zero—as well as some kids-specific slip-ons featuring Basquiat’s more youthful art. Another standout from the collection is an exclusive Manual Hi featuring all 21 different paintings on one shoe, painstakingly set across 21 different panels. And typical of DC collaborations, we took it a step further with the Basquiat Hybrid, a never-seen-before mashup of the Lynx OG and Legacy OG. This one-of-kind shoe drops August 14 and is sure to sell out fast.
