MERYL MEISLER – NEW YORK PARADISE LOST

Posted on 2021-06-07

Meryl Meisler’s series “New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco” is an intimate journey through the pandemonium and ecstasy of New York City from the 1970s to the early 1990s. Meisler documents a tumultuous time in the city’s history marred by epidemics of crime, addiction, and AIDS, intensified by a paralyzing blackout and political and fiscal crises. Frequenting Manhattan’s legendary discos that arose from the disorder, she captured hedonistic havens patronized by celebrities and revelers of the night. In contrast, daylight revealed the beauty of those who loved and thrived in burnt-out Bushwick, where Meisler worked as a public school art teacher and continuously documented her surroundings.

EXTRA BUTTER X ADIDAS

Posted on 2021-06-07

This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of Adam Sandler’s most iconic films, Happy Gilmore. Extra Butter is celebrating the occasion by releasing a collaboration with adidas that draws inspiration from the coveted gold jacket that Gilmore and Shooter McGavin are vying for in the movie.

The colorway of the Ultraboost 1.0 is a direct nod to said gold jacket, with the upper being done up in gold-colored Primeknit with suede overlays at the toe and heel. Seemingly inspired by a golf ball, the white Three Stripes cage and matching Boost midsole serve to complement the base, while McGavin’s signature finger gun sign is featured at the toe. Elsewhere, we find debossed Ultraboost branding at the heel, a white adidas logo on the tongue, and a graphic printed insole with iconography from the film. Golf enthusiasts can take advantage of a webbing incorporated across the striped cage of the shoe, where you can stash three golf tees.

Releasing exclusively at ExtraButterNY.com and Extra Butter’s Lower East Side and Long Island City Friday, June 25th, 2021.

GUILLERMO KUITCA

Informed by the worlds of architecture, music, theater and cartography, Guillermo Kuitca’s paintings seek to incite the potential for a theatrical experience. This summer, the celebrated Argentine artist returns to Hauser & Wirth Zürich with an exhibition of new and recent work exploring these long-standing motifs. Exhibited across the ground floor of the gallery, the presentation is divided into three distinct bodies of works: paintings from The Family Idiot series first exhibited in Los Angeles in 2019, new works including Kuitca’s House Plan series made during the 2020 lockdown in Buenos Aires, and the artist’s ongoing Theatre series.

MELORA KUHN – TALES FROM THE DARK

Posted on 2021-06-07

Presented for the first time, these richly layered paintings provide dream-like narratives stemming from the time spent by the artist in Mexico during the 1980s, as well as that decade’s US-backed political violence and societal turmoil in Central and South America. The images call to mind the equivocal storytelling of Green’s 1994 bilingual novel, Camino Road, tracing a New York art student’s illusive reminiscence of a road trip to Mexico.
