Posted on 2018-12-24

Early 18th century England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfil her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

RECOLLECTIONS – DIANA H. BLOOMFIELD & SAL TAYLOR KYDD

Posted on 2018-12-24

The two artists in this exhibition create soft, dream-like photographs that reflect the elusive and ambiguous nature of memory.

In her series The Old Garden, Diana H. Bloomfield photographs flowers cut from her garden and left to wither. The soft, muted colors against the textured surface of her studio are brought to life in Bloomfield’s use of gum bichromate, a 19th-century photographic process that combines chemistry and watercolor paints. Finding beauty in their decay, flowers including camellias, Lenten roses, and quince speak to Bloomfield’s southern roots and her memories of her grandparents’ garden.

Sal Taylor Kydd explores the idea of memory and our attempts to preserve it. Photographing the people and landscapes of her home in Maine, her images show moments that are clear and striking even as details of time, place, and identity are lost in the peripheral blur. Hand-printed in platinum-palladium, each photograph gives the appearance of a small moment, becoming a keepsake of the mysteries of the natural world and the distortion of memory over time.

WILLIAN COUPON – PORTRAITS

Posted on 2018-12-24

For more than 40 years William Coupon has photographed an astonishing array of esteemed artists, politicians, athletes, and intellectuals, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mick Jagger, Jimmy Carter, and Mohammed Ali among many others. Inspired by classic portrait painters such as Rembrandt and Holbein, Coupon’s signature style places his subject against a hand-painted backdrop lit by a single oblique light source. This rich chiaroscuro lends Coupon’s portraits a dynamic weight while focusing our attention on his sitters’ expressions and engagement with the camera. The results are captivating. As an exhibition, William Coupon: Portraits acts as a kind of time capsule examining the personalities who have helped shape the last half-century.

A solo exhibition by featuring images of notable cultural icons and ethnographic studies dating back to the 1970s by celebrated Santa Fe-based photographer William Coupon. The exhibition corresponds with Coupon’s long-awaited monograph of the same title published earlier this year by Damiani.

Opposite – Miles Davis, New York City, 1986
