MATTHEW PORTER – NEWS FROM NOWHERE

Posted on 2018-07-02

The exhibition consists of a series of color and black & white photographs, depicting a fictional place that centers around the construction, abandonment, and rediscovery of a series of dome structures. The location is a tropical island, and three discrete characters make appearances. They are seen performing tasks, but their roles, and the timeline of their involvement, is never clear. Part science fiction, part fantasy, and part narrative riff, the work is a nod to both the real and literary tradition of placing stories of post colonial hubris in tropical locations.

Five domes erected in the sea, bone white and wind scarred. The mystic palm, ragged-edged, dips in the breeze. White planes, black birds. A ship cuts a dark notch on the hard edge of a bright sky. A man is clearing the site, gathering stems. Later, a woman takes a reading. The sun touches the horizon. News from nowhere.

MATT CONNORS – LOOK UP

Posted on 2018-07-02

For much of his career, Connors, a New York-based painter, has shown an almost mischievous embrace of familiar templates to create what he refers to as “compelling confusion.” His approach to painting puts an emphasis on the idea of the structure of his work. By overloading the canvas with pigment-rich paint, or using laminate as a compositional material, he creates pieces that bend conventions. Much like the title of his 2012 book, A Bell Is A Cup, a painting is also a physical construction.
For his new exhibition, Connors has developed a wide range of tones, building on the inspiration he draws from life in a city built on grids, lines, and
boundaries. Serendipity is an important compositional tool for Connors, and for this show. Figures re-emerge in different patterns, with varied weights and palettes. Deep fields of color are balanced with blocks of white space. Borders can be traditional —contained within the idea of a frame —or can jut into the viewer’s world: Some of the pieces are not on canvas, but are instead plaster casts that paint has been encouraged to seep into. By mounting them on the wall or on pedestals, Connors turns them into objects with a mysterious form and function.

PALACE x ADIDAS TENNIS

Posted on 2018-07-02

The tennis-themed pieces range from on-court apparel such as polo shirts and shorts to leisure wear, including terry white tracksuit with removable sleeves and a bucket hat. The Wimbledon collection also features Palace’s first foray into womenswear, with three tennis-ready looks.

The capsule includes accessories like caps, socks, tennis balls and even a dual-branded umbrella. Lastly, Palace has put its spin on adidas Tennis’s Ubersonic 3 silhouette. The pieces will be worn by adidas athletes during Wimbledon, meaning that the collection needs to come in an all-white color palette.

Palace’s adidas Tennis collaboration will drop in store and the Palace web store on July 3.
