ANNA REIVILA – BOND

Posted on 2018-03-05

The exhibition will feature photographic works from Reivilä’s series Bond: a study of the landscape through the act of binding and associating natural elements.

According to Japanese religious ceremonies, ropes and ties symbolize the connections among people and the divine: a means to identify sacred space and time. Inspired by Nobuyoshi Araki’s images and their mixture of raw violence, beauty and the nature of bondage, Reivila’s photographs study the relationship between man and nature.

Anna Reivila writes, “The Japanese word for bondage, kinbaku-bi, literally means “the beauty of tight binding”. It is a delicate balance between being held together and being on the verge of breaking. I search spaces where elements combine to create interesting natural tensions and continue this dialogue through my interpretations by extending, wrapping and pulling upon these indigenous forms. I create a new sense of volume from these existing components. Using ropes as lines is my form of drawing. The lines create interactions, making connections between the elements. These three-dimensional drawings are physically unstable: they exist only for the moment. By recording the process, the photograph becomes part of the piece.

This collection also sees Hender Scheme expand from its signature natural or all-black leather palette with the introduction of more colors and metallic hues. The NMD model maintains its recognizable design with blue and red midsole accents mimicking the EVA plugs, while the Micropacer drops in metallic silver with pastel blue and red touches.

All pairs are masterfully made in Tokyo and produced in US sizes 5-11. The Hender Scheme x adidas Originals Spring/Summer 2018 collection will release in the US on March 16th.

LORNA SIMPSON – UNANSWERABLE

Posted on 2018-03-05

Simpson continues to develop the language of the found image as a source for her work, incorporating photographs from her collection of vintage Ebony and Jet magazines from the 1950s to the 1970s. These publications focused on subjects of lifestyle, culture and politics from an African-American perspective and are credited with chronicling black lives and issues so sorely under-represented elsewhere in the media.

Through layering and collage, Simpson’s recent works reconfigure imagery of the female form and reflect the artist’s ongoing exploration of, and response to, contemporary culture and American life today. An installation, entitled ‘Unanswerable’ (2018), is composed of over 40 individual photo collages each of which is unique and created from original source material and archive photography. A series of female protagonists are often the focal point of the images and Simpson splices these with architectural features, animals and natural elements to create scenarios that are at once poetic and arresting. In this way the artist deftly suggests compelling new narratives that emerge from the unexpected settings and contexts.

MARINA PEREZ SIMAO – OUR DOG-EYES

Posted on 2018-03-05

Intending situations of conflict in a historical, geopolitical and philosophical sphere under a foreign look, her works allow readings that are sometimes abstract and dissonant with the reality of the landscapes portrayed, a changing reality at any moment, beyond the image. A lie told often enough becomes the truth but telling a truth a thousand times makes it questionable, this territory of vulnerability is the main point of the artist’s exhibition. The uncertain border between chaos and order in the landscape is developed in a research of composition and a study of colors that propose to the images an unknown nature, being able to displace who looks at them to another planet or to a desert explosion.

The personification of this unknown place, a relation of observation not only of the structural points of the landscape but the personality and feeling of that place is a concern of Simão. Through the composition of images using painting as a mean and not the final result of the study, her work discusses a movement between the cartesian plan and the holistic plan within the landscape.

CHRIS HUEN SIN KAN

Posted on 2018-03-05

With no prior sketching or planned outcome, Huen’s large-scale oil paintings are derived from observation of his own life, portraying quotidian experiences through a fresh set of aesthetic strategies. In constructing a constellation of moments that compose his daily life, Huen imbues domestic representational painting with both deft abstraction and the hallmarks of traditional ink painting.

Maintaining an acute awareness to their surroundings, the paintings depict the people, activities, and landscapes near the artist’s home and studio. Based in the remote area of Yuen Long, located in rural land north of the dense urban center of Kowloon, Huen paints an extended narrative revolving around a recurring cast of characters that includes his wife Haze, son Joel and dogs Balltz, Mui Mui and Doodood. This new set of works finds Huen portraying the night, enabling him to experiment with a darker, more saturated palette.
