TweetZhang Wanqing, born in 1985, emerged as an up-and-coming artist in China in 2011. At that time, she decided to live a recluse life in Shenyang in Northeastern China. She continued to paint and remained almost invisible to the outside world, which is very rare among young Chinese artists. The exhibition Lonely Hills shows her work after five years of solitude and confinement. The title Lonely Hills derives from the poem The Deer Enclosure by Wang Wei, one of the famous poets of the Tang Dynasty. The poem opens with:
So lone seem the hills; there is no one in sight there,
But whence is the echo of voice I hear?
This describes the first impression of Zhang’s paintings. During the past five years, she focused on landscape, the Lonely Hills without any human traces. However they embody a strong human presence by addressing a psychological and emotional experience.

Bruce Silverstein is pleased to present an online exhibition devoted to the photographs of Frank Paulin, predominantly captured in the 1950s on the streets of New York City. Many of these early images by Paulin were featured in a 1957 solo exhibition at Helen Gee’s pioneering gallery and café, Limelight—then New York’s only gallery for fine art photography, as well as a local hangout for the great photographers of the time. Despite the fact that his 1957 solo show at Limelight predated the recognition of photography as a commonly appreciated medium, admiring reviews for the show appeared in the New York Times as well as the Village Voice, praising Paulin’s ‘humor and compassion’ and his uncanny ability to perceive irony and record what they referred to as ‘poetic accidents.’

Wendel Wirth is best known for her landscape photographs with a minimalist palette. Her large-scale color photographs taken from a single vantage point explore atmospheric nuance in swiftly changing environments. Choosing to shoot in atmospheric conditions, Wirth creates monochromatic images that distort the viewer’s perspective of the landscape. Her compositions prompt the viewer to contemplate our place in the world. Wirth’s purpose is for the viewer to look inward at how the image moves them. “My intent is that the complexities and pensive nature of the photographs are universal, and yet, intimately personal”, Wirth states.
