PESSIMIST – PESSIMIST

Posted on 2017-08-21

Blackest Ever Black’s chief junglist Pessimist turns in an extended subzero excursion, picking over the bones of skeletal breakbeat and industrial techno to create the most vivid fever of what constitutes darkside drum & bass in 2017.

Captured between a slowly morphing intro and a knife-addled outro, Pessimist’s debut album goes into deep waters with eight shark-like tracks circling up ahead whilst you fall to the seafloor bed of post-hardcore bassline pressure and caustic, choke hold techno-submarine-weaponry.

DAVID LAMELAS – TIME AS ACTIVITY

Posted on 2017-08-21

David Lamelas’ Time as Activity (1969–2017) is the Argentine artist’s groundbreaking and ongoing series of structural films and videos. First conceived in the late 1960s in the early days of the conceptual art movement, of which Lamelas was an integral part, Time as Activity has grown to include numerous iterations, each filmed in different cities throughout Europe and the Americas. The presentation at Sprüth Magers, Los Angeles, will feature eleven films and highlight both the consistencies and the diversity between them. It will trace not only the series’ evolution, but also the different locales that have informed the artist’s four-decades-long career, as well as recurring themes found across his multimedia work, including architectural space, the language of film, and the experience of time and duration.

GEROLD MILLER

Posted on 2017-08-21

Whilst new sculptures from the “Verstärker“ series are on view at Mommsenstrasse, the series “section“ is presented for the frst time on Fasanenplatz. These radical wall works represent the latest development in Gerold Miller’s production, to date the most far-reaching step of his defying attitude against traditional forms of painting and sculpture. The “section“ piece is surrounded by works from the series “set“ and “monoform“, that are characteristic of the artist’s thorough refection on a reduced approach of representation, which he has been developing since the 1990s.
Through “section“, Gerold Miller broadens the classical concept of painting, merging the work with the architecture of the gallery space. It consists of a tilted truncated black and white square that immediately evokes the Russian avantgarde and Malevitch. The painting becomes a relief, a sculpture within the wall, which is turn changed into a pictorial space. The artist plays here with a subtle balance between the surface, the room, light and shadow, in order to question or way of seeing, his monochrome felds and black stripes both catching and withstanding the viewer’s gaze. Gerold Miller’s strategy is purely abstract, focusing solely on the materiality of the and of the space itself.
