FRAGILE WATERS

Posted on 2017-07-31

Water is very much on the minds of Californians after six years of drought. Fragile Waters celebrates this precious, essential resource and encourages dialogue about water conservation. One hundred and seventeen black-and-white photographs by three artists whose works span a century create a powerful collective statement. Ansel Adams’s early prints, made from 8-by-10-inch glass plate negatives, are some of the most iconic images in the history of photography. His reputation as an artist is matched by his role as a founder of the modern conservation movement. The exhibition will feature thirty-seven works by Adams— including rarely seen historic images from his family’s private collection—along with photographs by Ernest H. Brooks II and Dorothy Kerper Monnelly.

MASON COLLECTION 1 : RESURRECTION

Posted on 2017-07-31

Joe Perez, freelance creative director who gained prominence for helming Kanye West’s DONDA design studio from 2011-2016, has just introduced his new clothing line MASON.

The inaugural range is a direct reference to Perez’s childhood experiences when he listened to heavy metal, played guitar, and skated with friends around Providence. Standout pieces in the assemblage include a nylon varsity jacket with embroidered patches, a denim jacket wrapped in tonal black, and graphic tees with MASON branding.

FARAH ATASSI

Posted on 2017-07-31

Atassi’s canvases contain deeply considered anachronistic montages, allowing for a range of art-historical references—from designers such as the Memphis School to older movements within painting such as the constructivists and cubists—to commingle on the surfaces and beyond. Throughout her bold and expansive pictorial worlds, Atassi’s geometry and icons function as meta-languages.

In fact, Atassi describes her work as “space and object” painting, as the rectangles are literally anchored on the walls while the accumulation of lines and forms sprawl out into any particular space in which they are displayed. She conceives them as an act of staging—the figures dance a notated choreography; the objects dangle in suspense. The action, or potential for action, contained within each picture is a recollection of previous moments in time—lasting snapshots of creative progress relayed in order to rattle the natural cyclical static state of art-making. By willfully and playfully acknowledging these antecedents, she also wisely and powerfully acknowledges her own complicity in the chain.

KUNST – KUNST

Posted on 2017-07-31

‘Kunst’ marks the first collaboration between these two heroes. John Cunnane, p.k.a. dgoHn & Jodey Kendrick, a.k.a J.K., Black Narcissus, Lord Of The D. Both gentlemen have appeared on Rephlex and Weme Records. It’s strikingly original, great listening but hard to describe accurately with attention-grabbing pidgeonholes: ”From ambient, moody soundscapes to rinsing, hi-tech workouts.. and beyond.”
