JAMES CULLINANE – PORTALS

Posted on 2016-10-31

Cullinane begins each diptych along the seam between the panels. Working from the center out the initial drawing emerges from the line of separation between the panels to create a unified whole. Each line begins and ends in an ink dot as he randomly fills the surface of the panel regulating his breathing as he draws. In some compositions Cullinane uses an old-fashioned mouth atomizer, which use a simple tube mechanism and the artist’s breath to spray ink across the surface creating gradations of color and value. Looking like open books or, perhaps, Rorschach tests, the scale of each piece is intimate and relates directly to the human form, specifically to the artist’s body. The width of the large horizontal diptychs is about Cullinane’s average reach and when turned vertically the diptychs resemble the size of windows. The varying densities of lines, dots and sprays alter our perceptions of form and space. The resulting compositions undulate across the surface, expanding and contracting in and out of a perceptual space.

ITEM IDEM – METHOD OF LOCI

Posted on 2016-10-31

The narrative structure is based on Method of Loci, a memory enhancement technique that was used in ancient Roman and Greek treatises. Also known as ‘memory palace’ or ‘mind palace technique’, this mnemonic device uses visualizations with the use of spatial memory to quickly and efficiently recall information. To the artist, it serves as the connecting constituent for the unusual and circumstantiated personal representations of the archaic and modern aspects of the time he lives in, while also abates the echoes between the works. To the viewer, it reads as the conceptual manual of the show.

Method of Loci is emphasized on a collection of sourced mass-marketed products and packagings. As a cataloguing venture, it stands as the post-apocalyptic turnover of Marcel Broodthaers collage walls, or Aby Warburg’s _Mnemosyne Atla_s. By pointing out on what our eye can not see anymore, Duval picks and arranges the products of our rampant consumerism, turning it along the toxicity of the current world into an art medium by itself, based on the poetics of commerce.

Exhibition runs through to November 26th, 2016

AYŞE ERKMEN – UNLIKELY

Posted on 2016-10-31

4for8see (2016) is a group of sculptures made of rolled metal leftovers, which play with the psychology of colors used in graphic and product design. The reduced, elegant-looking objects are lacquered in a greenish-brown hue reminiscent of nature, perhaps of the landscape backgrounds of classical European paintings. In fact, it’s Pantone color 448C, Opaque Couché, allegedly the “ugliest color in the world,” according to a survey conducted by a market research institute. Printed on cigarette packages, it’s supposed to reduce their consumption. Here, the artist uses color as a kind of readymade, by drawing attention to its hidden meanings. The objects’ metal plates come from the refuse produced during the creation of artworks made in a metal workshop in Berlin. In Erkmen’s sculptures the discarded material and the negatively connoted color unite to create something new that opens up space for utterly different associations.

The piece all available (2016) consists of a number of monochromatic colored panels hanging closely together in the gallery’s skylight room. If one were to look at the paintings outside of the context of Erkmen’s oeuvre, they could be mistaken for color field paintings that rely solely on the emotional impact of color and material, free of any social references. For the artist, however, the aesthetic qualities of each hue are not crucial. On the contrary, Erkmen simply attempts to make use of all of the paint colors produced by various manufacturers, and all of the colors are of the same importance. The title, all available, refers to the easy availability and ubiquity of colors, but can also be interpreted as a playful attack on the commodity status of art, especially of painting.

MOON TEMPLE – THE SHORT DANCE

Posted on 2016-10-31

You may not recognise him by name, but you’ll definitely know his former band of New York dancefloor fiends, The Rapture, whose cowbell-heavy indie featured the bass, keys and sax talents of Andruzzi.

Earlier this month, the multi-instrumentalist teamed up with fellow New Yorker Willie Burns to release Moon Temple 1 and 2, his first nine track LP. ‘The Short Dance’, which features on the release, was the first track he wrote for the project, and now has a video.
