TOMORY DODGE – DIRECTIONS TO A DIRTY PLACE

Posted on 2013-04-08

Paint can be both the image and the “stuff” of structure, moving between representation of place, and place itself. The work of Denver-born, Los Angeles-based artist Tomory Dodge and Trinidad-born, New York-based artist Denyse Thomasos slide between these poles in highly evocative ways. While much of Dodge’s imagery is drawn from things observed during excursions into the California desert, much is left to fantasy as his maps move between geography and cosmology. Thomasos creates architecture with, and through paint – spanning multiple scales to suggest the blueprints of places half-real, half-imagined.

Exhibition runs through to September 1st, 2013

ASHLEY BICKERTON & NICOLAS POL

Posted on 2013-04-08

The exhibition presents a dialogue between two distinctive and wildly imaginative artists, born of different generations, who draw upon a similar reactive nature to construct vibrant, fantastical, and often times, otherworldly images of apocalyptic proportion.

Ashley Bickerton’s work from the late 80s and early 90s was fueled by a critical assessment of America’s obsession with consumerism; created in reaction to the sleek packaging, corporate branding, and growing reliance on technology that dominated the cultural landscape at the time. His object-based sculptures, or “Culture-scapes,” from this period were angry, defiant constructions covered in logos and seemingly built to withstand apocalyptic devastation.

Nicolas Pol spent much of his childhood in Africa before relocating to France, where he earned his degree from the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, La Sorbonne. Following two successful solo shows at Alsopp Contemporary in London, Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld presented Pol’s work in three large-scale international exhibitions: The Martus Maw, New York (2009); The Mother of Pouacrus, London in (2010); and Sick Atavus of the New Blood, New York (2011).

Exhibition runs through to April 20th, 2013

LOTTIE DAVIES – MEMORIES AND NIGHTMARES

Posted on 2013-04-08

Lottie Davies work is concerned with stories and personal histories, the tales and myths we use to structure our lives: memories, life-stories and beliefs. She takes inspiration from classical and modern painting, cinema and theatre as well as the imaginary worlds of literature.

Her Elaborately staged scenes are the visual manifestation memories and nightmares, one of her own the day my brother was born and others gleaned from other people. The multiplicity of the layering in her photographs through analogy, metaphor and physical placement gives each image the possibility of numerous interpretations. Self-fulfilling prophecies can often have a rippling effect as the series has delighted audiences throughout the world, whom have re-interpreted and projected their own histories within her imagery.

These are not quiet pleasant photographs to glance upon. They are bold, strong – intensely intriguing – parodies worthy of prolonged viewing. Davies images are for the strong willed, confident individual who is not afraid to face their demons. Colour is key to her work; using bold imaginative strokes she wields the lens towards her meticulously constructed tableaux. Furniture, costume and props are found to build each individual set around her models that are varied and striking in equal measure. Intricate planning and careful placement render her work truly mesmerizing. Strong emerald greens, reds and turquoise feature throughout which immediately grab our attention as the subtleties of detail come into view, whether it be the strange impossible reflection in a mirror or the rocking horse in a maternity ward.
