THE REAL THING: UNPACKAGING PRODUCT PHOTOGRAPHY

Posted on 2024-05-20

The photographs in this exhibition do not depict rare or special things. They show toothpaste, tombstones, and hats. But these familiar trappings of everyday life will be, at times, unrecognizable—so altered by the camera as to constitute something entirely new. Enticing consumers with increasingly experimental approaches to the still life genre, the photographs featured transform everyday objects into covetable commodities. The camera abstracts them from functional use, at times distorting them through dizzying perspectives and modulations of scale. Spanning the first century of photographic advertising, the exhibition will illustrate how commercial camerawork contributed to the visual language of modernism, suggesting new links between the promotional strategies of vernacular studios and the tactics of the interwar avant-garde. Corporate commissions by celebrated innovators, including Paul Outerbridge, August Sander, and Piet Zwart, will appear alongside obscure catalogues and trade publications, united by a common cause: to snatch the ordinary out of context, and sell it back at full price.

YORGOS LANTHIMOS – DEAR GOD, THE PARTHENON IS STILL BROKEN

Posted on 2024-05-13

The God in the title of the book alludes to what Bella (Emma Stone) calls Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) throughout the movie, whose decrepit face mirrors the likes of Frankenstein and to which Void co-founders João Linneu and Myrto Steirou replicate in appearance through the publication’s graphic cover. Linneu and Steirou recalled being “amazed” when being invited to see the sets during the film’s production. “Everything was there: good photography and an artist we felt compelled to work with. These two factors don’t always align.”

Dear God, the Parthenon is still broken will be released in three separate editions: the first is just the book for $60 USD, while the Special Edition is limited to 100 copies with a fine art print signed by Lanthimos for $392 USD and the Portfolio edition, limited to just 30 units (plus four APs) includes two fine art prints numbered and signed by Lanthimos for $1,580 USD.

MICHAEL KENNA – JAPAN A LOVE STORY

Posted on 2024-05-06

Michael Kenna has been photographing around the world for over fifty years. His in-depth explorations and imagery of Japan since 1987 stand out as perhaps his most distinguished and well-known works. In his own words, “On my first visit to Japan, I was blown away by the aesthetics, the spiritual and religious aspects, the curiosity of the people, their friendliness and generosity,” he says. “Later, I went up to Northern Hokkaido in the middle of winter, and it looked to me like a stark sumi-e ink painting, a white canvas with Kanji characters marked on it. I’ve been in love with the place ever since.”

An exceptional exhibition comprised of one hundred original silver gelatin prints, hand-crafted by Mr. Kenna, has been curated by Peter Fetterman. The exhibition will be presented by Nikkei, the Financial Times and Peter Fetterman Gallery in Tokyo, Los Angeles and London in 2024, celebrating half a century of work by the renowned British photographer, and his enduring relationship with Japan. The exhibition catalogue is designed by Hideyuki Taguchi and published by the distinguished Nazraeli Press, and a short film with unique footage of Mr. Kenna working in Japan will be presented by the French film-maker Richard Bonnet.

WORKS BY GÜNTER BLUM AND GEORGE PLATT LYNES

Posted on 2024-04-29

The Fahey/Klein Gallery is pleased to present the two-person exhibition Anatomy of Devotion: Works by George Platt Lynes and Günter Blum. The photographs on display explore varying relationships between artist and muse and the intimate and complex interactions that fuel creative expression. Both Platt Lynes and Blum utilize photography to investigate a more profound expression of sexuality and the concept of desire through their subjects. The erotic charge in each work is unmistakable. Admiration and yearning are not hinted at but expressly declared. Their cameras transformed into a conduit for narratives of empowerment and self-expression. Both artists convey raw vulnerability while unveiling great defiance of stereotypes and constraints.
