SAUL LEITER – IN MY ROOM

Posted on 2018-06-18

Fed by thrilling recent discoveries from Saul Leiter’s archive, the exhibition reveals the world of the artist and the women in his life through his studies of the female figure. Often illuminated by the lush natural light of Leiter’s studio in New York City’s East Village, these black-and-white images uncover the mutual and empathetic collaboration between the artist and his subjects.

In the 1970s, Leiter planned to make a book of his nudes, but never realized the project in his lifetime. The exhibition and upcoming book offer a first-time look at this body of work, which Leiter began on his arrival in New York in 1946 and continued throughout the next two decades. Leiter, who was also a painter, incorporates abstract elements into these photographs and often shows the influence of his favorite artists, including Bonnard, Vuillard, and Matisse.

The prolific Leiter, who painted and took pictures fervently up to his death, worked in relative obscurity well into his eighties. Leiter preferred solitude in life, and resisted any type of explanation or analysis of his work. With In My Room, he ushers viewers into his private world while retaining his strong sense of mystery.

Leiter made an enormous and unique contribution to photography with a highly prolific period in New York City in the 1940s and ’50s. His abstracted forms and radically innovative compositions have a painterly quality that stands out among the work of his New York School contemporaries.

POSTER GIRL IN PUBLIC

Posted on 2018-06-12

Poster Girl – a London based label specialising in luxury micro-mesh womenswear – have recently introduced a Series of photographs putting light (or shade) on the way we want to be perceived through social media. Developed by the design duo in Los Angeles while visiting a Goodwill thrift store, the images revolve around their signature aesthetic being seen in day to day situations (rather than on the red carpet or at a party). Using voyeurism and lo-fi camera equipment, the outcome shows the designers humourous & light hearted outlook on today’s current fashion landscape. With a society plagued by new standards of ‘perfection’ seen on every blogger’s / influencer’s feed, it’s hard to keep up or see individuality. To these designers, there’s no shame in being spotted at Tesco looking spectacular, let alone taking out the bins or getting lunch at a local chippy.

µ-ZIQ – D FUNK EP

Posted on 2018-06-11

Analogical Force pull in the legendary µ-Ziq for an EP of archival electronics of the highest order, the D-Funk EP does exactly what it says on the tin: four choice tracks of Planet Mu funk that doesn’t sound a million miles away from the aquatic electro of Drexciya 3 mixed in with some of Mike Paradinas’ greatest moments of Autumn acid-era breakbeat frequencies.

While Analogical Force describes D-Funk as coming from the golden era as with pretty much all of Mike Paradinas’ output, there is a timeless quality to the music that makes it hard to pinpoint the actual date or time it was produced in. Yet while D-Funk both fits in with the 90’s Drexciya and UR Hi Tech Funk sound, it also acts as a time machine of transportation to the most jacking moments of Tango N’ Vectif and Bluff Limbo.
