MARSHALL

Posted on 2017-10-16

Based on an early trial in the career of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. It follows the young lawyer (Chadwick Boseman) to conservative Connecticut to defend a black chauffeur (Sterling K. Brown) charged with sexual assault and attempted murder of his white socialite employer (Kate Hudson). Muzzled by a segregationist court, Marshall partners with a courageous young Jewish lawyer, Samuel Friedman (Josh Gad). Together they mount the defense in an environment of racism and Anti-Semitism. The high profile case and the partnership with Friedman served as a template for Marshall’s creation of the NAACP legal defense fund.

AIDS AT HOME

Posted on 2017-10-16

AIDS at Home: Art and Everyday Activism examines how artists and activists have expanded the idea of caretaking and family and navigated the political stakes of domestic life in the face of the HIV/AIDS crisis, from the early 1980s to the present. From the earliest diagnoses, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has spurred New Yorkers to create new forms of social support, identify new legal battles, and explore new artistic terrain. The exhibition places paintings, photography, and film alongside archival objects from activist groups and support programs to uncover the private stories of HIV and AIDS and reconsider caretaking, community building, and making art as acts of resistance.

AIDS at Home includes work by more than 20 artists – well-known, emerging, and newly discovered – including David Wojnarowicz, Nan Goldin, Kia LaBeija, Hunter Reynolds, Hugh Steers, Luna Luis Ortiz, Lori Grinker, Avram Finkelstein, Susan Kuklin, L.J. Roberts, and Chloe Dzubilo, as well as several activist and arts organizations.

STEPHEN BARKER – THE ACT UP PORTRAITS

Posted on 2017-10-16

On view are 15 never before seen black and white photographic portraits of AIDS activists —in the studio and at home—taken during his time working within the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP), 1991-1994, and Barker’s unique artist’s book Funeral March, which chronicles the carrying of Mark Fisher’s body in an open coffin from Judson Church, up Sixth Avenue, to the steps of the Republican National Committee on the eve of the presidential election in 1992.

Barker became involved with ACT UP in the late 80s working primarily with the needle exchange program. The photographs were never intended as an encyclopedic project, but rather the portraits evolved organically out of Barker’s working relationships, friendships, and intimacies. The exhibition is especially timely during this 30th anniversary year of ACT UP when once again all under-served communities, including those living with HIV/AIDS, are threatened by our own government. It is a call to arms for activism and a reminder of the distance we have traveled and battles we have won.

Opposite – Rod Sorge (1969-1999)

Exhibition runs through to October 28th, 2017

Posted on 2017-10-16

Hong Kong’s JUICE is next up to participate in adidas Consortium’s Sneaker Exchange alongside Footpatrol. adidas’s Matchcourt Mid and Handball Top serve as the two canvases for the collaborative drop as they both host embroidered graphics holding inspiration from the detailed creation of souvenir jackets. The Matchcourt Mid’s basketball structure gained popularity among the skateboard community thanks to its canvas upper. This time around the model welcomes an attention-commanding dragon while the Handball Top sneaker boasts a blue suede upper with gold embroidery. A lion paw is also incorporated on its heel in addition to Tudor rose detailing found on its tongue.

The adidas Consortium Sneaker Exchange Juice & Footpatrol Matchcourt Mid and Handball Top are set to drop on October 28th, 2017.
