MAKAYA MCCRAVEN – SO UBUJI

Posted on 2022-09-12

Makaya McCraven’s latest album In These Times has been long in the making. Spanning over seven years of recordings, the album’s explorative palette reflects this relatively vast timespan, evident immediately in the opening title track’s lilting, luxurious arrangements of baroque orchestras and cosmically minded jazz, and the well deserved applause rhythmically woven into its sonic structure. Across the album’s delicately tailored compositions, hanging gardens of plucks on ‘High Fives’ and ‘Lullaby’ are joined by cascading clicks and chimes, and curious piano ripples meet with winding guitar passages and punchy, crashing waves of drums on ‘The Knew Untitled’.

BUFOBUFO – FLORA AND FAUNA

Posted on 2022-09-12

Ritual Poison label head BufoBufo comes through with his debut album after having landed on the scene in 2017. As well as being his first for Altered Sense, his first full length album takes us on an invigorating journey through different club strains, with breakbeats guiding every step of the way. Traces of funk slink around the bassline of ‘Pigeon’, evolving from smooth undertones to a front and centre synth amidst lush, lowkey breaks. Telephones beep and metallic shards clatter throughout ‘Missed Call’, with piano chords and a booming sub bass pointing in a dub direction over electro-leaning bouncing beats.

OM UNIT – ACID DUB STUDIES II

Posted on 2022-09-05

Bristol bass legend Om Unit returns with the sequel to his beloved self-released detour into acid and dub with Acid Dub Studies II. Much like its antecedent, Dub Studies II makes liberal use of those 303 basslines while its syrupy slow tempos allow the listener to luxuriate in the sound. Running a few notches hotter (and a few steps closer to the dancefloor) than the previous Study, tracks like ‘Strange Brew’ wisely add more rhythmic heft without fully sacrificing the heady vibes at the heart of this project. While Om Unit does cut most of the ambient drift loose, there are still plenty of musical moments more fit for headphones and a deep couch cushion than a cavernous club on this go around.
