TweetThe master of musical U-turns Mica Levi is back, and this time on Hyperdub with a single that, fittingly, no one could see coming. ‘slob air’ evades structure with hefty, jumping drums like skipping stones that loop to hypnotic effect, and glittering chords with a timbre in liminal space between strings, brass, winds, and synth, instilling a hazy, gooey, warm feeling in the heart. Above the occasional rumbling bass hum are shivering vocals calling from beyond reach. You could call it hypnagogic pop, post rock, experimental ambient, dream pop, but we think just magnificent will do.

A collection of warmly melodic electronic sketches, with tracks alternately drifting beatless on the breeze or underpinned by lo-fi drums, sometimes barely held together with a delicate construction of odd synth patches and ping-pong percussion. Each piece is short and to the point, a record of perfect miniatures. Whilst this description may sound utopian, the album is conceived around themes of late stage capitalist brutality, hyper consumerism, online doom and alogorhithmic apocalypse. Beauty in the face of planetary collapse and 24/7 livestreamed genocide. The theme summed up by the front cover which just features a giant (readable) QR code, that most ubiquitous of modern symbols. We’ve asked Bogdan on several occasions for more background information on the creation of these tracks, but received a different answer each time. TweetA move to Japan after 13 years in Berlin has sparked one of Masayoshi Fujita’s most life affirming statements yet as an artist. Migratory tracks the travels of birds and humans alike, with vibraphone and marimba unfolding in shimmering waves above the taut drones of the shō and the breeze of saxophones. Synths chirp and percussion chimes and everything slowly changes; the album expands with the expertly measured gait of Moor Mother’s spoken word on ‘Our Mother’s Lights’, musing on worldly connection through migration, and Hatis Noit’s gentle lullaby set to a verdant backdrop of cicada calls on ‘Higurashi’.
