GYROFIELD – SUSPENSION OF BELIEF

Posted on 2025-03-03

Gyrofield is 22-year-old, Utrecht-via-Hong-Kong producer Kiana Li, who has put out several albums and over a dozen EPs since 2018, from self-released productions to projects on Metalheadz, XL Recordings and FABRICLIVE among many others.

Their next EP is Suspension of Belief, and it arrives on Objekt’s label, Kapsela. (Following last year’s Ganzfeld and Chicken Garaage, it’s Kapsela’s first record by an artist other than Objekt himself.) In keeping with her recent releases, it shows Li continuing a creative renaissance, moving beyond the outer fringes of drum & bass to present what they call “a set of deeper, shapeshifting tracks, cross-pollinating ideas from house, free jazz and techno.”

HITECH – DROP THE LOC

Posted on 2025-02-24

Detroit partystarters HiTech caps off their biggest year yet with a mixtape of new tracks that brings together all the roots of their rambunctious sound. Motor city machine funk is the obvious engine powering the function, but the group drops plenty of Chicago in the mix too alongside the punkier end of rap. Having been around the world and back on tour, HiTech goes global here too, bringing in guests like UK singer George Riley for a new look with the stuttering mid tempo thump of ‘TAKE YO PANTIES OFF’. That said, HiTech is at their best when they trash talk at warp speed like on the deliriously fun ‘SHADOWREALM’.

SOISONG – LOM TUM LAI KWEE

Posted on 2025-02-17

Following the ethereal soundscapes of the previous year’s qXn948s, Ivan Pavlov and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson’s SoiSong project did an almost 180 and embarked on the route of song with xAj3z. Influenced by Sleazy’s Thailand homebase, the duo alchemised elements from the Thai language and genres like luk thung into fusions of jazz, classical, trip hop, electronica, ambient, and even post rock breakdowns, creating some of the most gorgeous and arresting music to come from either artist. Crystalline MIDI keys and pulled bass curiously tiptoe between dissonance and gentle melody, mysterious with their staccato jaunts as digital voices contort, an evocative exercise in restraint away from their previously whirring industrial machinations.

HOLOGRAM TEEN – ACTARUS

Posted on 2025-02-10

Morgane Lhote continues to honour her foundational years in the glitz and glamour of 80s Paris’s bustling underground nightlife as Hologram Teen, inaugurating her very own label Hologram Opera (which she runs with Holy Sun Opera House) with her fourth album Captain Fluo. Punchy drum machine beats and piano stabs strut along to the album’s metropolitan tone, breezy in a joyous montage on tracks like ‘Actarus’ as strings blossom in. Her influences shine on ‘Wolkman’, centring her keyboard performance with punctuated and staccato synthpop, meanwhile ‘Pack Ur Patience’ features a deep house inflected four to the line driving Sandra Zettpunkt’s steely vocal hooks.

QUICKLY, QUICKLY – I PUNCHED THROUGH THE WALL

Posted on 2025-02-03

Graham Jonson is drawn to the comforts of melody and noise. How the two conspire in tension, tonally and atonally, stirring up memory and mood. This quality animates the technicolor world of quickly, quickly, the psych-pop project that emanates from Kenton Sound, his basement studio in Portland, Oregon. “Everywhere your eye lands, there’s another curio to marvel over,” noted Pitchfork’s Philip Sherburne when he visited Jonson’s recording space for a Rising feature just after the release of his “strikingly original” 2021 debut LP, The Long and Short of It. Since then, Jonson formed alive band, released his Easy Listening EP in 2023,and navigated the up-and-downs of a young musician, the sustainability of tours and relationships.

“I Punched Through The Wall” by quickly, quickly from ‘I Heard That Noise’, out now on Ghostly International.
