Berlin’s Steffi debuts her new Candy Mountain imprint with the propulsive electro of The Red Hunter, her fourth LP. Collecting modulating rhythm alongside breaks and complex sound design to great effect. Tracks like ‘Alternation of High and Low’ and ‘Tragedy Turns to Comedy’ certainly spin their wheels in service to the dancers, but both pack the kind of mind altering elements most in this lane shy away from.
TweetAfter releasing three records in 2021 (the aforementioned 9696 Dream, the hip-hop-leaning Flex Time EP and his most recent album Love Letters, Nine Through Six), 96 Back went back to the drawing board this Spring and emerged – in typical fashion – with a folder of 50+ new demos. Listening to those demos, it became clear that something new was forming: a sound that was more pastoral than Evan’s previous work; dreamy and dubby even when up-tempo.
While whittling down and developing those demos to a tight 10 tracks, the album’s title track turned into a manifesto of sorts for the entire project – intimate music to let the sun fall on your face too. In 96 Back’s words, “This record is a labour of love truly, pulling sounds and tones together … it feels far more collage like and pastoral than anything I’ve worked on. It felt incredibly natural to put together and sequence, something that I’m super proud of!”

TweetNick Doyle has been unraveling the myth for some time now. His art stages a cognitive scramble of coded objects: wilting poppies and smashed bouquets, wrenches and vises, all enlarged to a uniformly exaggerated scale and rendered in layered denim, the feminine and the masculine given equal weight—the trompe l’oeil of Doyle’s many layered collage technique suggesting painting where none exists.

Philadelphia-based artist Distortedd’s (Anhia Santana) Zaira is her first original vinyl art toy. Drawn from her Synchronicity painting—her favorite piece—the bust-style figure features a beautiful woman with pastel wire fragments in her hair and across her body. Having cut the wires tying her to the outside world, the one-eyed character—a Distortedd signature—is free to connect to herself. The figure stands apart with its sexy yet off-center design.
