DEANNE DAY – THE LONG FIRST FRIDAY

Posted on 2020-11-23

Andrew Weatherall and David Harrow made a striking near-one-off of forward-thinking deep house in 1996 under their diva-indebted collaborative moniker Deanne Day. As dedicated to classy Detroit house as it is to the club scenes of 1990s London, ‘The Long First Friday’ and ‘Hardly Breathe’ are about as spacious as progressive house gets. The a-side drives an 808 beat to the moon and back via clusters of vibrant synths, as the b-side injects a clangorous host of hi-end and bumping bass for an overall perfect slice of dancefloor magic.

WANDER

Posted on 2020-11-23

Arthur Bretnik is a conspiracy theorist and private eye with a traumatic past. After being hired to investigate a possible murder cover up in the small town of Wander, Arthur is plunged into a world of lies and deceit, as he quickly suspects the murder may be part of the same ‘conspiracy cover up’ that caused the death of his daughter. Increasingly paranoid, Arthur’s sanity is tested as he attempts to filter fact from fiction and solve the case, all the while questioning if he is a pawn in a much bigger game.

JAKOB DE BOER – WHERE RAVENS CRY

Posted on 2020-11-23

In many ways, Where Ravens Cry was about going back in time – back into my earliest childhood memories of the Pacific NorthWest, but also into the origins of the mythology of this place. I have always wanted to stand in places where myths were birthed. Being there, one is reminded that beginnings are defined by time. By combining ‘photographed’ elements through juxtaposition, a kind of duality between the ‘real’ and the ‘created’ – meaning time – was birthed. Pre-Myth represents the whole of the work as all things were born out of it. In working on it, the sculptural nature of the Pre-Myth piece shifted my photographic thought process. When I crossed over the invisible barrier of “yes I can put these images together”, my photographic process changed.

POLAR SKATE CO WINTER 2020

Posted on 2020-11-23

Sweden-based Polar Skate Co launches its Winter 2020 collection featuring British skater Jamie Platt. As one of the more prominent skateboard brands in Europe, the team has decided to go heavy in its offerings this year by releasing a number of playful board graphics along with well-made apparel.

Approaching its collection with more of an artistic and political stance is a bevy of hidden meanings in designs for each piece. For example, the ACAB pieces in the collection, designed by the artist R.Mettz, feature the acronym “ACAB” which stands for “All Cops are Bastards.” This bold abbreviation addresses the brand’s stance on police brutality and issues of racial inequality.
