RTJ X DEVIANT & DANDY BREWERY

Posted on 2019-06-17

London’s Deviant & Dandy brewery join for another collaboration with Run The Jewels. This time, they took inspiration from Dark ‘N Stormy cocktails to brew a Pale Ale which pours amber in colour like its cocktail namesake, and drinks smooth and refreshing with aromas of lime zest & sweet molasses and a ginger & lime finish.

LA FRAICHEUR – WELTSCHMERZ EP

Posted on 2019-06-17

La Fraicheur releases new EP ‘Weltschmerz’.

Produced both at her home studio and on tour, between Berlin, New York and Mexico, La Fraicheur wrote the ‘Weltschmerz’ EP following two impulses. One being the desire to make music closer to the “no mercy / take no prisoners” biting sounds of her engaging powerful techno sets, the other the necessity to deal with overwhelming feelings of anger, disgust and frustration born in the backlash following her debut album release and newfound visibility confronting her with the invasive violence of misogynistic trolls.

NEW BALANCE 990V5 X SIZE?

Posted on 2019-06-17

At the heart of every small British community lies the local corner shop – a convenient place to stock up on your weekly necessities. Throughout the ’80s, vibrant packaging and signage lined the shelves and plastered the windows of shops across the nation. Brand names were splashed across products in bold, brash typefaces.

The size? Exclusive New Balance 990v5 draws inspiration from the colours found in these corner shops, selecting a palette of blue, yellow and pink and applying them to the latest rendition of the celebrated runner.

TRUMPET KING ZEAL ONYIA RETURNS

Posted on 2019-06-17

One of the founders of West African highlife in both Ghana and Nigeria, Zeal played Ellington-style swing and dance with Bobby Benson in the 40s, classic highlife with ET Mensah in the 50s and provided stiff competition for Fela Kuti’s first band as a small-jazz combo leader in the early 60s.

After studying classical music in Germany for most of the 70s, he returned triumphantly to Lagos in 1979, where he promptly recorded these six memorable tunes with the Tabansi Studio Band. From the village-party vibe of ‘Zeal Anata’ to the instrumental workout ‘Egwu Olili’, every one of the tracks is a winner.

This LP remains one of the most in-demand old-school Igbo-highlife sessions of all time, both in Nigeria and elsewhere, the original vinyl being devilishly hard to find in ANY condition, let alone playable! As part of its ongoing Tabansi Gold reissue series, BBE Music brings you the first ever reissue of this historic record, from the original source, on heavyweight vinyl, complete with original sleeve artwork.

In Nigeria, the Igbo people call this style ‘Agadi-Akwukwo’- ‘old-school’. And they have as much love and respect for it today as they did all those decades ago.

KATHRYN ANDREWS – CIRCUS EMPIRE

Posted on 2019-06-17

Andrews’ work explores histories of dominance and ways in which latent or normalized social power structures influence culture. Her sculptures and 2-D works often incorporate the images and artifacts of hegemonic cultural production, such as mass media, commercial products, advertising, the entertainment industry, as well as citations from canonical Western art history. Andrews employs the strategies of pop art and minimalism to interrogate these modes of production, in an effort to highlight how aesthetics, namely image presence and materiality, are used to influence perception and, in turn, consumption tendencies.
