THE NORTH FACE ’92 RAGE COLLECTION

Posted on 2019-01-08

Originally introduced in 1989, the Rage collection embodied the bold attitude of snowboarding and enabled athletes to progress the sport by addressing the unique demands of the emerging sport. Designed and engineered to withstand the thrashing and bashing of radical riding, the pieces were built with athlete input to perform at the level of our alpine gear, without losing the party-with-pockets aesthetic.
This spring 2019 The North Face pays tribute to this rogue culture and spirit, relaunching select pieces from the 92 Rage collection that stay true to their wild-out colors, bold patterns, and unique trims. Big blocking, baggy fits and loud graphics also live on through this special streetwear release that pays homage to its snowboarding roots.

The collection is available from January 16th.

LUKE SMALLEY – EXERCISE AT HOME

Posted on 2019-01-07

ClampArt presents “Luke Smalley (1955-2009) – Exercise at Home” in celebration of the 10th-year anniversary of the premiere of the body of work. This is the artist’s third solo show at the gallery.

Smalley passed away far too young at the age of 53, but he left behind three major bodies of work, in addition to four impressive monographs. The new show at ClampArt will feature his second project, and his first in color, titled “Exercise at Home.”

Luke Smalley’s work has been described as pairing “a coolly minimalist aesthetic with a retro nostalgia.” Many of his images were inspired by yearbooks and fitness manuals from the beginning of the 20th century. After completing a degree at Pepperdine University—tellingly, in sports medicine—Smalley became increasingly interested in fine art (while earning money from modeling and working as a personal trainer). He spent fifteen years completing his first body of work, “Gymnasium”—a series of black-and-white gelatin silver prints depicting young, male athletes set in an ambiguous time and place. The subjects of the photographs were all local high school students from the small Pennsylvania town where the artist was raised.

JEFFERSON HAYMAN

Posted on 2019-01-07

Jefferson Hayman’s photographs are filled with nostalgic and vintage imagery. Each print has either a vintage or artist made frame, rendering them unique art objects. Through a quiet minimalism, he invites the viewer to partake in the narrative process in a way that is both intimate and deeply personal. Drawing from his education in the fine arts and his training in the art of frame-making, Hayman approaches his work with a deep understanding of traditional craftsmanship and a sense of artistic heritage whilst remaining tied to the present through the timelessness of aesthetic simplicity. Through an understated language of visual symbols and meditative studies, Hayman’s work manifests as a visual journal chronicling transformation, discovery, and solitude, boldly stripped of the extraneous. Each photograph is handcrafted as a silver gelatin, platinum or pigment print, capturing a delicacy in tonality reminiscent of early Pictorial photography as well as the subsequent modernism movement’s refined interplay of light and shadow. Finished prints are paired with antique or artist-made frames, meticulously custom-made by the artist, whose attention to the unique attributes of each photograph imbues every piece with a completely unique story and sense of personality.
