SELVES AND OTHERS

Posted on 2018-09-10

The most compelling photographic portraits reveal more than simply a sitter’s physical appearance – they hint at an individual’s character, suggest a psychological state, or perhaps even offer a glimpse of the sitter’s soul. Drawn from the many generous gifts Carla Emil and Rich Silverstein have donated to SFMOMA’s collection since the late 1990s, this exhibition features portraits of the self; of personas or avatars; of family members, lovers, and friends; and of strangers. Made from the nineteenth century to the present and organized thematically, the works in the exhibition were created by artists including Claude Cahun, Rineke Dijkstra, Man Ray, Cindy Sherman, and Gillian Wearing, among many others.

PETER FRASER – MATHEMATICS

Posted on 2018-09-10

Since the early 1980s, Peter Fraser has been at the forefront of pioneering colour photography as fine art. With an almost obsessive focus on the ‘stuff’ of the world, Fraser is concerned with the matter that comprises our everyday. Rather than constructing his photographs, Fraser establishes a conceptual framework through which to respond to found images and situations. He treats panoramic landscape and the smallest details with the same intense attention, revealing the incidental beauty and strangeness of our surroundings.

For his exhibition at Camden Arts Centre, Fraser presents his most recent body of work Mathematics. Reflecting on the idea that time, space, and everything within it, can be described mathematically, Fraser brings together a series of photographs of seemingly disparate and unrelated objects and encounters – including still lifes, landscapes and portraiture. Through their oblique juxtaposition and his almost analytical focus, he draws attention to the underlying patterns and forces which shape the world and our perception of it, as well as the systems of belief through which we try to understand and describe it. In this way his work might be seen to draw our attention to the spectacular and interconnected nature of everything that surrounds us, from the sublime to the mundane.

KID DRAMA – ENFORCER EP

Posted on 2018-09-10

Kid Drama’s sound is one that’s taken giant strides in the last couple of years, first showcased in his Metalheadz debut which came in the form of last years ‘Trife EP’.

Building upon that is the addition of the ‘Enforcer EP’ – set for release this September and consisting of 4 chunky slabs of hard-hitting drum and bass interlaced with beautiful pads and soundscapes, a combination very few successfully execute.

CLIMAX

Posted on 2018-09-10

From director Gaspar Noé (Irreversible; Enter the Void; Love) comes a hypnotic, hallucinatory, and ultimately hair-raising depiction of a party that descends into delirium over the course of one wintry night. In Climax, a troupe of young dancers gathers in a remote and empty school building to rehearse. Following an unforgettable opening performance lit by virtuoso cinematographer Benoît Debie (Spring Breakers; Enter the Void) and shot by Noé himself, the troupe begins an all-night celebration that turns nightmarish as the dancers discover they’ve been pounding cups of sangria laced with potent LSD. Tracking their journey from jubilation to chaos and full-fledged anarchy, Noé observes crushes, rivalries, and violence amid a collective psychedelic meltdown.

MADSAKI – FRENCH FRIES WITH MAYO

Posted on 2018-09-04

While much of MADSAKI’s work centers on his interest in art history and critiquing mass culture with references to slang, movies and manga characters, the artist has recently been exploring more personal, intimate topics. To express this visually, MADSAKI developed a signature style using spray paint as a fine art medium, stemming from the fact that he has never participated in illegal graffiti on the streets. The artist is particularly known for his Wannabe series, which at first glance humorously targets old masters, yet their deeper meaning is a reoccurring theme that can be found throughout MADSAKI’s artistic practice – an attempt to use laughter and humor as both distraction and therapy for his internal turmoil.
