ALL GONE 2016

Posted on 2017-01-09

For its eleventh issue, La MJC asked amazing English artist Neil Raitt to transform two of his extraordinary paintings into both of the All Gone covers.

Neil Raitt’s oil paintings are compositions of endlessly repeated natural motifs. Exploring the idea of repetition itself as a form of abstraction, Raitt’s work addresses landscape painting and the accessibility of its figurative form.

Hard cover, 208 pages.
Limited edition of 1750 copies.

SID GROSSMAN

Posted on 2017-01-09

In a short career, ended by his untimely death at age 42, New York native Sid Grossman left an indelible mark as an artist and teacher on the photography of his era and beyond. In 1936, Grossman and his friend Sol Libsohn co-founded the Photo League, the left-leaning, socially conscious photographers’ cooperative and school. Photographing at a very close distance and using blur and off-kilter compositions, Grossman’s work of the late 1940s anticipates the work of many better known street photographers of the 1950s and 60s.

“Grossman’s vision of creative photography changed the lives of many around him and resulted in a body of work of major historical importance,” Davis writes in the book. Among the many photographers who were taught or influenced directly by Grossman are Sy Kattelson, Leon Levinstein, and Lisette Model. More broadly, traits of Grossman’s work and philosophy can be seen in the work of Ted Croner, Roy DeCarava, Louis Faurer, Robert Frank, William Klein, and Saul Leiter as well as Garry Winogrand and a younger generation of 1960s artists.

The exhibition surveys 35 photographs by Grossman, from his own neighborhood of Chelsea, to Little Italy and Coney Island, as well as in Central America during World War II, while serving as a photographer in the U.S. Army.

MARTIN JACOBSON – THE EXHIBITION

Posted on 2017-01-09

The exhibition consists of over 40 oil paintings, aquarelles and objects presented in a classical salon display. The works in the exhibition are interpretations of previously made collages by Martin Jacobson himself. These collages are composed by images collected from what one could call the scrap heap of visual culture: reproductions of reproductions, postcards, illustrations from children’s books, scientist books and history books. On the surface the paintings almost appear to be painted by various people, some are more modest, like child book illustrations, others recall art historical images. The result is an eclectic imagery, simultaneously familiar and unknown.

The main thread in Martin Jacobson’s work runs beneath the surface – his interest for myths, dreams and the collective memory of images. Dreams are a form of personal myths and myths are collective dreams. As such, they have been important tools for his paintings.

MR. TOPHAT FEAT. ROBYN – TRUST ME EP

Posted on 2017-01-09

It’s a match made in dancefloor heaven: Swedish house maestro Mr. Tophat and pop phenom Robyn have come together for Trust Me, a three-tracker of dark disco and luscious grooves that only an inspired pairing such as this could conceive of. With each track going well beyond the nine-minute marker, Trust Me is the artistic culmination of two artists joining together in the studio and putting pure inspiration to tape, resulting in some of the loosest and most intriguing music either has made in their careers.
