SUPREME X STONE ISLAND

Posted on 2014-09-29

Established in Italy in 1982, Stone Island has found its own language with the aim of establishing new boundaries in the world of garment making. The culture for materials research and experimentation, the study of function and usability of garment shapes and details are the factors that have always defined Stone Island.

Stone Island’s strength is based on the unique ability to intervene on the finished item, through dyeing and treatment techniques carried out in its own color lab. The extensive study of thousands of uniforms and of work wear items, its evolution according to new requirements of use, has become Stone Island’s observation post for defining a project beyond mere aesthetics.

Supreme has worked with Stone Island on a collection for Fall 2014. The collection will consist of the Raso Gommato Cover Nero Jacket, a hooded sweatshirt, a crewneck sweatshirt, sweatpants & a camp cap. The Raso Gommato Cover Nero Jacket features a wind and water-resistant cotton satin bonded to a polyurethane coating with a removable garment dyed down liner. The hooded sweatshirt, crewneck sweatshirt and sweatpant feature a garment dyed cotton fleece. These items have been made by Stone Island for Supreme. The camp cap has been made by Supreme in Raso Gommato Cover Nero fabric.

FRANCESCA WOODMAN – ZIGZAG

Posted on 2014-09-29

In her short career Woodman produced an extraordinary body of work – over 800 photographs – acclaimed for its singularity of style and range of innovative techniques.

This exhibition considers the zigzag and other abstract geometrical forms as recurring visual themes in Woodman’s work. Woodman’s practice is often discussed in terms of its surreal and symbolic imagery, but her work was grounded in a sophisticated understanding of form. Her photography exemplified strong compositional motifs, and the repetitive, regular shape of the zigzag, with its strong lines and angles, was a form she used in images of disparate subjects.

Many of Woodman’s gelatin silver prints feature this strong, idiosyncratic abstract lineage, and she also extended her investigation of the serial geometrical form in her large-scale diazotype prints. The artist described one of these works in a letter to a friend in 1980: ‘It will be … a long string of images held together by a long compositional zigzag, thus the corner of a building in one frame fits into the elbow of a girl in the next frame into a book in the third frame, the images are both very personal mysterious ones and harsh images of outdoor city life. It is hard to get the adjoining images to fit the rigorous structural scaffold’.

JAN KEMPENAERS – ENJOY THE PROCESS

Posted on 2014-09-29

Jan Kempenaers: Enjoy the Process is a substantial mid-career survey of Jan Kempenaers’ new and recent work. BREESE LITTLE will present a focus on the Antwerp-based artist’s output across the ground floor gallery, introducing the breadth of Kempenaers’ work beyond his most renowned images. This will include a number of photographic series and individual images largely unseen in this country, accompanied by Kempenaers’ recent experiments with screen-printing and a full display of the artist’s books.

Kempenaers’ photographic body of work is highly considered and meticulously compiled. Most series are restricted to a few carefully chosen shots of striking compositions. A glimpse of the artist’s website shows this archiving procedure, which shaves down any surplus imagery in favour of crucially representative images.

Posted on 2014-09-29

Primrose showcases the appearance and development of colour in Russian photography from the 1860s to the 1970s. It presents both the history of Russian photography and the history of Russia in photography, depicting life over the course of a century, as the country endured unprecedented upheaval.

The exhibition is arranged in chronological order and shows the development of photographic colour technology and the social transformations which altered the role of photography in Russian society. Early experiments range from hand-tinting of images to early 20th century tri-plate isochromatic photographs and autochromes.
