SARAH MOON – ABOUT COLOUR

Posted on 2014-02-24

It is difficult to summarise Sarah Moon’s fantastical photography, almost thirty years of image making has made Sarah Moon a legend in her own lifetime. Well known for her personalised commercial and editorial work since the early 1970s, Moon has continued to investigate a dream world of her own invention, without repetition or compromise. For more than thirty-five years, Moon’s heart-stopping fashion images have bucked every so-called commercial trend, from the need to establish eye contact, it is only rarely there, to the belief that the most alluring fashion photograph must be glossy, even hyper-real.

“I think of colour as more of a common language. More generous, more open, not transposed, the language of the real. When I shoot flowers or any still life, or fashion, colour forces me to be more abstract, I have to make the effort to transpose it, in order to get closer to what it was that first impressed me’
‘For me, black and white is closer to introspection, to memories, to loneliness and loss, I don’t see the same in colour, it’s another language, a living language.” – Sarah Moon 2008

WALTER NIEDERMAYR – OBERFLÄCHEN

Posted on 2014-02-24

Niedermayr has returned to the European Alps to develop the body of work for the present exhibition. The artist is widely recognised for his large-scale, subdued photographs of alpine landscapes and images of the architectural spaces by Japanese architecture firm, SANAA. In each of his series, Niedermayr maintains a focus on man’s relationship towards his surroundings. For the works in the exhibition at Galerie Nordenhake Niedermayr focuses on our growing intrusion on nature through acts of entitled avocations.

Since the 1980’s, Niedermayr has been interested in exploring the various ways in which space has been shaped and occupied by man. He questions the ephemeral realms between representation and imagination through the lens of his camera. Engaging with the tradition of the great landscape artists, Niedermayr’s compositions stop and suspend time and encourage the viewer to re-evaluate our imposition on nature: He assembles single images of the same motif into one seemingly continuous panorama. The resulting multi-panel images provoke a dualistic disconnectedness, both spatial and temporal. This approach unsettles photography’s designated role of capturing a moment in time and denies the possibility of landscape as a unitary image.

CHANEL 2014 SPRING/SUMMER BACKPACKS

Posted on 2014-02-17

Made in a thick linen canvas, the backpack is produced in adherence with House traditions and requires several hours to complete. Every motif was specially conceived and reproduced thanks to a specific printing procedure which allows for a wide variety of shades and several colour effects.

Playing with conventions, Karl Lagerfeld has personalised the backpack and given it an authentic and worn appearance: graffiti, tags, splashes of paint and colours, added details like scoubidous, snap hooks and luggage tags, “There’s a certain lightness and a certain kind of humour in all this,” he declared.

The iconic codes such as the quilting of the backpack, the metal initials, the double C pendant and the painted logo are reminders of where it’s come from. The luggage tag has an aged finish; the hand-woven handle and zipper tag are crafted from beautiful leather. Finally a hand-woven scoubidou is attached to a metal snap hook, just like the good luck charms of teenagers, adding further originality to the bag.

Available in two sizes (as well as a third tote shaped version) and three colours, the CHANEL backpack is available in the CHANEL boutiques, and also for a limited time at Colette, from February 24th to March 8th 2014.
