REALISM IN RAWIYA

Posted on 2013-01-28

Realism in Rawiya presents the work of the first all-female photographic collective to emerge from the Middle East, Rawiya. Operating within what is still a predominantly male-dominated industry, and one fraught with politics, the group credits pooling resources and talents for their rapidly developing profile throughout the Middle Eastern region and beyond.

Each artist established their individual careers as photojournalists, working for news agencies and publications across the Arab world. By living and reporting in the region, the photographers gained an insider’s view of the extremities of these settings, whilst also observing how their reportage could become reframed in the international media’s final edit of events. This shared experience inspired the members to create their own platform, to present what they felt to be the wider political and social stories currently going unseen.

Exhibition runs through till April 20th, 2013

NICHOLAS HUGHES

Posted on 2013-01-28

Dust particles rising through the projector beam of a darkened London theatre form the genesis of Nicholas Hughes’s series Aspects Of Cosmological Indifference, which examines the space between the world that people inhabit and that which nature still claims as its own. In this intermediary space between the two, the photographer seeks to explore the essence of the human spirit and itsrelationship with nature. By focusing on boundaries, planes and surfaces he acknowledges the limits humanity has imposed on the natural world and contemplates the future for both.

With a deep environmental concern running through all his work, Hughes acknowledges the limits humanity have imposed on the natural world and contemplates the future for both.
Nicholas Hughes said: In experiencing our insignificance I found reassurance. We can but amount to mere scratches upon the Earth’s surface. No more than splashes of colour before we return to dust.

Exhibition runs from February 7th to March 31st, 2013

LUCAS FOGLIA – A NATURAL ORDER

Posted on 2013-01-28

Lucas Foglia looks at the lives of communities of people across the United States who have chosen to live ‘off the grid’:

“I grew up with my extended family on a small farm in the suburbs of New York City. While malls and supermarkets developed around us, we heated our house with wood, farmed and canned our food, and bartered the plants we grew for everything from shoes to dental work. But while my family followed many of the principles of the back-to-the-land movement, by the time I was eighteen we owned three tractors, four cars, and five computers. This mixture of the modern world in our otherwise rustic life made me curious to see what a completely self-sufficient way of living might look like.

From 2006 through 2010, I traveled throughout the southeastern United States befriending, photographing, and interviewing a network of people who left cities and suburbs to live off the grid. Motivated by environmental concerns, religious beliefs, or predictions of economic collapse, they build their homes from local materials, obtain their water from nearby springs, and hunt, gather, or grow their own food.
All the people in my photographs are working to maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle, but no one I found lives in complete isolation from the mainstream. Many have websites that they update using laptop computers, and cell phones that they charge on car batteries or solar panels. They do not wholly reject the modern world. Instead, they step away from it and choose the parts that they want to bring with them.” Lucas Foglia, 2012

THE PUNK SYNDROME

Posted on 2013-01-28

The Punk Syndrome is a film about Finland’s most kick-ass punk rock band, Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät. The band members, Pertti, Kari, Toni and Sami, are mentally handicapped and they play their music with a lot of attitude and pride.

We follow these professional musicians on their journey from obscurity to popularity. We watch them fight, fall in love and experience strong emotions. We witness long days in the recording studio and on tour. They laugh, cry, drink and fight over who gets to sit in the front on the tour bus. Then it’s time to make up and go talk to people in the audience and tell them how great their band is

WARM BODIES

Posted on 2013-01-28

After a zombie apocalypse R (Nicholas Hoult), a zombie, wanders around an America which is now filled with abandoned buildings, broken down cars and hordes of his fellow undead, including his friend M (Rob Corddry). R and M achieve rudimentary communication with grunts and moans, and occasionally near-words. As a zombie, R constantly craves human flesh, especially brains, as he is able to “get high” on the memories of their former owners.

Julie Grigio (Teresa Palmer) and a group of her friends are sent out by her father from a heavily-guarded walled-off human enclave in the city to recover medical supplies from abandoned buildings. R and a pack of zombies attack the group, and after R kills Julie’s boyfriend and eats his brain, he is overcome with love for her. He rescues her from the rest of the pack and takes her back to an airplane at an airport that serves as his home to keep her safe. The two develop a relationship, causing R to slowly begin to come to life.
