33HZ – HOT FLASHES

Posted on 2010-11-29

It’s from a couple of years ago, but the low slung 80’s re-groove from Brooklyn band 33HZ seems just right on a chilly December day, with the Tron influenced video!

TROPICAL NORTH QUEENSLAND

Posted on 2010-11-29

Thankfully, the Tropical North of Queensland was spared the deluge during the recent flooding that swept through the region and continues to shine as bright as ever. This is the coast that spans Mackay to the tip of Cape York.
So, with disaster safely averted and paradise spared, read on.

For many, North Queensland is but a byword for the submarine splendour of the Great Barrier Reef. A pretty coral feather in the cap, but, truth be told, the majority of Australia’s North East remains unexplored. Here at Black Tomato, we’re lifting the lid on this region’s alternative icons. (This means beaches, steel lizards and tropical rainforests.)
Test your Midas touch in the Palmer Goldfields and head to Split Rock to catch the ancient Aboriginal Rock Art on these stony walls. From Mareeba’s Tropical Wetlands to the Robinson Crusoe dream of Haggerstone Island – we’ve crafted a series of mind-blowing experiences to turn your image of North Queensland on its (very photogenic) head.

Opposite – Norman River Floodplain, Karumba

RAYMOND PETTIBON – HARD IN THE PAINT

Posted on 2010-11-22

This exhibition takes its title from basketball terminology: used to describe
a player moving within the rectangular and usually painted area below
the net, “hard in the paint” indicates the difficulty in scoring from this
angle amidst defensive pressure. In slang, it is also used to denote a
confident, tough, or aggressive disposition, and as such, it is reflective of the directness of Pettibon’s work. Hard in the Paint presents a wide range of drawings unified by their bold, vivid lines and striking compositions.
Fragments from American society have been singled out and distilled to key images, which often incorporate texts of varying
length from one word to several paragraphs. The selection of texts, which over the course of Pettibon’s career have come to
span a broad array of influences from popular media to Marcel Proust, William Faulkner, Henry James, Gustave Flaubert, and
the Bible, relate both rhythmically and narratively to the visual content of his drawings, although their relationship may not
always be immediately apparent.

Exhibition runs through to December 21st, 2010
